Care during Labor & Birth

Companionship during Labor & Birth

PictureLabor - the work that brings forth your gift!
Labor is a unique, and usually empowering, time in a woman's life. Women need to know that they are in a "Safe", even "Sacred" Space to focus on the work of the body to bring forth in childbirth. Women need to be surrounded by people that are devoted to her good, that can be trusted.

This can be a special time that the baby's father can be involved,  as a strong, loving companion and advocate. The big benefit for his work is great bonding with his family!

Women may desire a trusted friend or professionally trained Doula (labor companion) to help physically and emotionally with the work of labor.

Women will go through many changes during this "work" of childbirth as the midwife continues to assess and assist her during this time. The compassion and fortitude of her midwife helps her navigate this time in safety and peaceful assurance. Midwives do not use medications to induce, or hurry labor. They use time-honored, research indicated, methods of comforting and strengthening, women, knowing and trusting that a woman's strong, intuitive body can facilitate birth.

Just when the woman feels she has no strength to continue, her body responds to bring forth new life! This experience prepares her and her husband to bond more readily with their child. And the baby trusts Mom and Dad, knowing "this is my Family, my protection"!

Midwifery care
in Labor & Birth

Out-of-Hospital Birth Services
We are available for women who wish to have a natural birth in their home. Knowing that labor and birth are a natural part of life, we do not use medications to start or strengthen your labor. Neither do we use medications for pain management. We offer individualized care that listens to clients' needs and desires.

When given the opportunity, the majority of women are able to draw from their resources (from within, husband, faith, friends) and are well able to manage the work of bringing forth their child in safety. This proves out, time and again, that women have been wonderfully created and enabled to do so.

We may also provide services with other Professional Midwives who hold credentials as Licensed Midwives.  We trust the birth process and are competent to detect and handle problems that may occur in that process. There are often student midwives and assistants involved in care, but clients always have the opportunity to decide who will participate in their care.

The intake process helps to detect possible problems and address them in a timely manner. The presumption (according to the World Health Organization) is that most women coming into care would have an absolutely normal, uncomplicated pregnancy, labor, birth, newborn and postpartum experience.

Doula
(Labor Companion)

We can usually help you with a Doula. A Doula is a NON-Medical Labor Companion who can serve you from the time you are having regular contractions through the birth of your child and assisting with breastfeeding. Doulas use physical comfort techniques and provide informational support to help empower women and couples to have the birth experience they desire.

Some Doulas have had special training and can serve as Maternity & Postpartum Attendants. They help women during pregnancy if they need special assistance or are on bedrest. And then they help women during their recuperation time. This is focused on mother care, teaching mother about normal baby care,  assisting the family bonding process, helping with light housekeeping and simple meal preparation.
